Assignment 4: Friends

A friend loves at all times, all times, all times.  This is how one of my favorite songs at ECS started.  And it’s true.  A friend does love at all times.  But this kind of love is a tough love.  It’s the kind of love that tells you when you’re wrong.  It is the type of love that helps you grow stronger in Christ.
“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17” Friends are supposed to build each other up through love.  They are supposed to help each other grow closer to God.
The friend (outside of OBA) that I think of that has these qualities is Savannah.  She is an amazingly strong Christian.  I can talk to her about anything, and I know if I have a problem, I can go to her to get advice.  There are some things that we don’t agree on.  Things that aren’t really important, just minor disagreements, but we have learned that we are SIC’s, sisters in Christ.  And you always love your sister.   Sometimes it is a hard love, I hate it when there is something wrong in my life that she has to talk to me about, but I know that the only reason she talks about it is because she loves me.
I am a horrible friend. I will just come right out and say it.  Often times things I say are selfishly motivated.  I say mean things sometimes, I think mean things, and I am not the friend that sisters in Christ deserve.  One thing about me that I know I need to change is how I “help” friends.  My natural instinct is to reply to what they ask with MY opinions, and MY thoughts.  And that is not good.  A friend is supposed to help a friend grow in Christ.  And they only way I can to that is if I respond to problems they way God would have me respond.  I know that there are many qualities that I need to work on, but this is the one that God has lately really lain on my heart.
Basically, what I desire in a friend is someone who loves me and brings me closer to Christ.  And I hope that with God’s help I will be able to be the type of friend all of my brothers and sisters in Christ deserve.
